BUSINESS FEATURE | Calligraphy & Sequins

I came across Calligraphy & Sequins a while ago on Instagram and have always admired the details in each beautifully painted piece.  So when I asked if there were any businesses out there that would like to be featured on my blog, I was pleasantly surprised to find that an email from C&S had dropped into my inbox.

I had the amazing opportunity to interview Sahnia and learn more about Calligraphy & Sequins.

Calligraphy & Sequins brings you Islamic Art with a difference- bold colours and bold pattern set out to redefine Islamic Art as we know it. The combination of contemporary design and traditional calligraphy, embellished beautifully, gives you unique and beautiful artwork with a timeless effect. Founded by Sahnia Hussain, a self-taught female artist who likes to experiment with different calligraphy styles, using a range of materials.

What inspired you to start this business?
Calligraphy & Sequins remained mainly a concept for a long time. I felt there was a market for unique, bold and bespoke art that would beautify and personalise any home. I had a desire to create Islamic art that was different; bright and blingy! Colour is an important factor in my work; it is all around us - in nature, food, clothing, architecture but I felt the Islamic art available to buy was sometimes limited in design and certainly in colour. Islamic art is a statement in itself and should therefore stand out in our homes which is why I like to work with bold colours and pattern; art should beautify, remind and inspire.  This is what I aim to do with my work, and I pray insha'Allah others can gain inspiration through my art.

Recipe: Chocolate Cake

Who doesn't like chocolate cake?!  Everyone loves chocolate cake!  I haven't had a chance to bake for a while and have been watching loads of videos on Youtube with my daughter, and I realised that I actually miss baking......a lot!!

I used to bake all the time before I had my 4 month old, but since he was born I just haven't had the time.  So yesterday, during nap time of course, I thought it's time I made a chocolate cake.  I wanted to make one that was really really chocolatEy and looked like a real chocolate cake too.  You know what I mean?

So I found this recipe on the BBC Food website and it looked pretty easy and I also had all the ingredients too.  Which is the most important thing, isn't it?

I changed a couple of things though.  I didn't have two 8 inch pans, so used a 9 inch cake tin instead, and baked the cake on gas mark 3 in a fan oven for about 1 hour.  So instead of baking two cakes, i baked one and them cut it in half.

The second thing I did differently was that I filled and decorated my chocolate cake with fresh cream and topped with fresh strawberries because I like chocolate cake and cream.  I think it goes very well together.  In the recipe it says to make a chocolate icing, which I'm sure would taste great too.

Sherlock Holmes

If you read my post on My London Photo Album you'll see that I promised all you Sherlock Holmes fans something.  And here it is.

When I visited London earlier this year I went to 22 1B Baker Street, which believe it or not is where he actually lived!  But I'm sure you fans out there will already know all this.  I'm not actually a fan, sorry, but I do remember Sherlock Holmes from my childhood years and I know many people who are big fans.

So I also visited the street where the Sherlock Holmes drama is filmed and I'm sure you will recognise Speedy's Cafe too!

Anyways, I'm not going to go on too much beacuse I'm sure you're all looking forward to seeing the pictures.  So here they are:

A very quick and easy dessert

For this very simple, quick and easy dessert all you need are 2 ingredients.  Fruit and chocolate! Oh and some edible glitter if you like.  It's the perfect way to end a lovely meal or even for a party.  And it's healthy too.

Winter Chic | 3 Styles from Topshop

Just because it's getting colder doesn't mean your clothes have to be unflattering and boring.  Yes, you will have to wrap up warm but you certainly don't need to compromise your style.  Winter is all about layering, and that's great because it means you can still wear your cute summer dress.  All it needs is a cosy knit and a pair of tights along with some trendy boots and away you go.

I've put together 3 outfit ideas for you to try out or take inspiration from.  Not only this, but I also challenged myself to find a complete outfit from one high street store.  I chose Topshop.  I'm sure it's a favourite amongst many of you too.

Dress or Abaya?

Do you ever have those moments where you're just casually browsing the internet for nothing in particular and bam, just like that, something fantastic just catches you're eye?  Well, I had one of those moments today.  I think it has to be one of my most favourite finds.

I was just looking through Topshop online, as you do and here's what I found

REVIEW: Hadiyah's Natural Essence

OK so I've been meaning to do this for a long time now and although I put up a small review on my instagram I think it's about time I did a proper one for my blog.

There are a LOT of skincare products out there so there's definitely no shortage.  Some are just brilliant and work wonders and others not so.  And I suppose in some ways it's just about what works best for you and your skin.

I have quite sensitive skin on my face so try to be careful about what I use, as my skin tends to go red and irritable.  Sometimes, even when I use something mild.  I can't use anything too harsh so when I came across Hadiyah's Natural Essence on instagram I thought I'd try it out.

All the products are made with natural ingredients and are 100% halal too, so that's a great bonus right from the start.  Not only this, but together with all the positive feedback I was reading on Hadiyah's instagram page I knew this was not just a gimmick and that the products were actually working, and doing what they were supposed to.

Cardigans & Capes

The one thing I love about this season is that you can wear cosy cardigans to add layers as a stylish alternative.  I personally love cardigans, especially the longer length ones as they double up as a coat too.  These days you can find cardigans in plenty of chunky knits, colours, styles and designs.  No more plain janes!!  They're so easy to wear, just throw on over a dress, abaya or top and you're good to go.

Whilst searching for cardigans I came across plenty of stylish capes too.  So, it looks like capes are IN this season and here are my top picks.

Metallic Henna Tattoo

Recently I came across some metallic tattoos on instagram and thought it would be nice to try them out for myself.  I love henna but unfortunately I'm not very good at applying it, so I thought these were a great alternative.

The Hummingbird Bakery Experience

Earlier this year I went on a little Easter break with my family to London.  The last time I visited London was when I was 5 years old, so imagine my excitement when I started making a list of all the places I wanted to visit.  And one of them was definitely The Hummingbird Bakery.  I couldn't go all the way to London and NOT go, could I?

My So Called Photography Skills

I have to say I particularly enjoy taking photographs and being creative with my shots.  Long gone are the days when every picture was taken as just a front view.  If you know what I mean.

I've experimented with different angles, and have always wanted to do everything differently.  I mean, things can get pretty boring if it's all the same, right?  So I thought I would show you a few of my latest shots of my products at Love Hijab.

Let me remind you also that I'm no professional here, just someone who likes to make things stand out and look pretty.  I also don't own one of those fancy cameras with the humongous lens.  Nope.  And to be honest I wouldn't have a clue how to use all the functions on it either.   All I have is my trusty little iphone 5s.
